What is Spare5?
Spare5 is an app which pays you small amounts of money by completing ‘micro-tasks’ on your phone. Most tasks only take a few seconds, and the app pays on average $0.02 – $0.05 per task.
The idea is that you log on when you have a spare five minutes, and use that time productively by earning some cash!
What kind of tasks are available?
The Spare5 tasks are varied. So far the tasks I have done include: conducting mock web chat conversations, drawing polygons to outline shapes, identifying the colours and prints of clothes in different pictures, identifying different parts of speech in a sentence, and writing questions and answers for a science quiz.
Spare5 makes money by selling the data you generate to companies working on things like machine learning.

How much can you make?
I have been using Spare5 for about three weeks and have made the grand total of $14.44, as you can see from the screenshot below. I probably spent between 90 minutes and two hours on the app (split into small chunks) to make this much, which I suppose averages out at less than the minimum wage!
As you can see, nobody is going to make their fortune using this app. However, I literally did make this money in a spare five minutes here and there, when I would otherwise probably be killing time on Facebook. It’s not a bad profit for mindlessly playing around on your phone.
Cashing out
Anyone can use Spare5, in any country, as long as you have a Paypal account. Payment is in USD straight to your Paypal account every week. There is no transfer fee, and the minimum payment amount is just $1. You don’t have to request payment. As long as you have at least $1 in your account, your payment will be transferred to you automatically. The smooth and reliable payment system is one of the best things about the app!

My experience with Spare5
As you can see, I made over $14 using Spare5 in time that otherwise would have been wasted. I’m pretty happy with that.
The main problem with Spare5 is that there are just not enough tasks available to make a lot of money. I checked in several times a day when I first started using it, and sometimes went for days on end without seeing any tasks. Sometimes I would get an alert on my phone saying that new tasks had been added, but by the time I logged in they had already closed.
Also, you have to do unpaid qualifying tasks before you are eligible for the paid tasks. At first I didn’t mind, because I assumed that I would only have to complete one set of qualifiers and then I would be making money. However, now that I’ve been on the app a few weeks, it seems that tasks are rarely repeated. Each new task has its own qualifier that needs completing! This means you can spend a lot of time doing unpaid tasks before you get anywhere near the money makers.
Overall, I think this app has great potential. I will keep an eye on it in the hope that they add a steadier stream of tasks in future. Until then, I am getting a bit fed up of spending time on unpaid qualifiers. At the moment there are better ways for me to focus my money-making energies.
