Lol! Yep there’s always a risk when you accept strangers into your home – some of them will be less than ideal guests! But I also know people who have only good things to say about their Airbnb experiences 🙂 I think we have to remember there’s a reporting bias with these sorts of forums – people who have bad experiences are much more likely to write about them online than people with positive/neutral experiences. Also, hosts are free to decline any booking inquiries so you can set your own boundaries e.g. you can turn down people with no previous reviews. Hosting is not for everyone though (which I why I’m sharing these other ideas for making money with Airbnb). Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

Thanks for your comment Lee. Yes, would always suggest anyone do their own thorough research before jumping into any new business. There are good and bad sides to Airbnb as with most things so just throwing out some ideas in the hope it will be useful to some! 🙂

Look on the Hosting board posts. As a suggestion, try “dirty guests”, “rude guests”, etc. and you will be able to read about real experiences from current Airbnb hosts. Approx 60% of guests are clean, pleasant, leave your place in good condition and you would be happy to host them again. The other 40%, well, read for yourself.

I have heard and read a lot of negative press surrounding Airbnb and I would probably suggest that all the fine details are studied before diving headfirst into any area revolving around Airbnb. However, there is always negative press around any type of new money-making scheme and you dont hear about the thousands of brilliant reviews so I do take the bad ones with a pinch of salt.

I like the idea of it not being my property and I also like the idea of popping round and topping up toiletries etc as well as updating pictures for the listings etc. Like being a personal estate agent. Great post as always.
