Hi Debbie, sorry for the late reply.

You could try doing an online TEFL course such as the one linked above – the online courses are self-paced so you could skim through it pretty quickly if you’re already experienced, and just pay particular attention to the aspects you want to brush up on.

Alternatively if you want to refresh your experience working with students, I would recommend just diving in! There are many different online English teaching schools out there with different requirements. If you’re not confident teaching full lessons yet, perhaps start with one of the platforms that just offers conversation practise.

Sorry if this reply comes a bit late for you but perhaps it will help someone else! All the best πŸ™‚

Oh, that’s annoying! Thanks for sharing your experience and I will update the post accordingly. I hope you have success finding online English teaching work with one of the other companies on the list!

Thank you for this article, it makes interesting reading and has been very useful. I am a native English speaker and am TEFL qualified, but it was a while ago. Do you have any suggestions as to how to brush up on my skills before heading back out into the teaching world? I would like to teach online in the near future.
Thanks
Debbie

Hi Molly! If you don’t have a degree then yes, I think TEFL is pretty much essential (most places I’ve seen ask for either a degree and/or TEFL). However, if I understand correctly you are interested in in-person teaching, rather than online teaching, right? I actually don’t know much about teaching English to immigrants in the UK and I don’t know if they might have different requirements from online teaching. I would recommend looking up some English schools in your area and finding out what their requirements are. They will hopefully be able to confirm if the TEFL course I linked above is sufficient. Good luck! πŸ™‚

I don’t have a uni degree yet want to teach English to foreign students/ immigrants.
What is the best first step for me to do?
Shall I do TEFL First?
Thanks
Molly

Hi Lynn! It depends on the company. I believe you have to be resident in the UK or US to work for EF, but there are many other companies that recruit globally if you have the right qualifications (which sounds like you do!)

I think you can try italki, Dada, GogoKid, Palfish, Lingoda for starters, and I’m sure there are many others. Good luck!

Am I qualified to be an English online teacher in the job listings? I am a TESL graduate and I’ve been teaching English for almost 18 years.
